Misconceptions meet propoganda perceptions

A series of four synchronized suicide attacks shocked America awake and detrimentally affected global markets. Many lives were lost and the whole population of America opened their eyes in a way they had never thought to before.

September 11th, 2001 remains the deadliest attack made by terrorists in our world history. The mystery began to unfold the very next day but due to propaganda many Americans perceptions were coated by a shade of gray.

One crazy Baptist begins burning the Qur’an and the image of Baptist doctrine can be tainted. So many Americans have no idea what being a Muslim means, what type of spirit pervades through the writings of the Qur’an or what the actual meaning of Jihad is.

According to dictionary.com, Jihad is defined “1. (Among Muslims) A war or struggle against unbelievers. 2. The spiritual struggle within oneself against sin.”  Merriam-webster.com “1. A holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty; also, a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline. 2. A crusade for a principle of belief.”

The word Jihad has a first known use of 1869. It is derived from the Arabic characters, JHD, which mean “to strive”. Other words derived from the same root are effort, labor and fatigue. It is a beautiful and powerful mantra to be a warrior within self against sin. It is a valid concept to believe in something so strongly that you are willing to fight for its existence.

“Essentially Jihad is an effort to practice religion in the face of oppression and persecution. The effort may come in fighting the evil in your own heart, or in standing up to a dictator. Military effort is included but as a last resort, and not to spread Islam by the sword as the stereotype would have one believe.” (islam.about.com)

The concept of Islam is actually quite peace filled. Muslims pray several times per day, engage in prolonged periods of fasting to tame the physical realm, and are encouraged to not only be peaceful to other human beings, but to maintain peace also with animals and even trees. They are strictly commanded not to begin any hostilities with others. Therefore, conversion by the sword would not be a concept they would uphold. They fight for their own religious freedom. They would also never accept a conversion by sword because it would not be genuine and would not honor the spirit of Islam.

“And did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief but Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds.” Qur’an 2:251

Muslims take their honor seriously, they endeavor to be pure, honest and peace filled. This is certainly not the image they have been portrayed in since the September 11th attacks. Most people believe that the Jihad is a right wing faction among Muslims and that they are violent and angry. Well, perhaps they hold a right to be angry, but it would be against all they are committed to if they began hostilities.

They are seen as militant, hostile warriors out to murder all who are not of the Muslim faith. “…far more crucial was the effort (Jihad) to live in a way that God had intended for human beings.” (Islam, Karen Armstrong, pg. 6)

The concept of Jihad is one of honor, faith, substance, and the right to protect your beliefs, which if I remember my American history correctly, is why the Exodus from Great Britain all those years ago.

exponential decay

I remember when I was a small child, and I looked around at a world that seemed to move smoothly, to operate freely, and to draw upon my curiosity daily. My father who wore many hats as I grew up was a bookkeeper who took the value of money seriously. He prided himself in taking care of his possessions and keeping things running like a well-oiled machine. My mother would pinch pennies and fed a large family on a very modest income. My parents instilled in me the need to be observant, to know the world around me intimately, and to understand its operation.

Math was extremely important to my Dad, and he translated his passion to me and I now hunger to see the solution to the equation. In this day, as we look around we see an economy in danger. We realize that there is not much left to our national financial security and we are forced to wonder, “What can be done?”

Because of this class especially, I have begun to think using the different sequences and equations we have used to ascertain the financial state of the world around us. We are in times of economic decay. What can be done to salvage our world?

One of the things we can employ is formulas for exponential decay. This concept does not necessarily have to relate to money alone. It may also be used in the area of nature (bacteria, animal population, and wetland water levels). We can relate it to bank accounts, yes. We may also relate it to viruses such as AIDS, radioactive materials, temperatures, and credit payments.

According to thefreedictionary.com the definition of exponential decay is “a decrease that follows an exponential function”. In laymen’s terms, it is the decline of numbers in an exponential pattern that follows a ratio of decrease at an exponential rate. The rate of change remains constant. It would increase as time wore on due to its exponential value.

A quantity is said to be subject to exponential rates of decay if it decreases at a rate proportional to its value. If the decay quantity holds a relative exponential value it can be determined how long it will take for complete dissolution. The rate of change remains constant and can therefore be followed actively, predicted and perhaps augmented or stopped altogether.

The reverse of this approach would be named exponential growth and would have the opposite exponential effect. Again, being able to be tracked and predicted through careful mathematic calculation.

National Geographic can use exponential decay formulas to determine the water decline in wetland preservation areas, the animals that are endangered or close to becoming endangered. This type of mathematical equation can be employed to allow for the salvage of an entire species.

Of course the rate of decay is directly proportionate to the amount present. Therefore, as in any mathematical or scientific approach, things must be accounted for accurately in the beginning of the process in order for the equation to function as designed. Careful observation and numbering would be highly necessary.

As we watch the world around us decay we can sit back and allow it to happen or we can become an active role in preventing the extinction of species, the propagation of viruses that could be calculated and maintained. There is so much in the mathematical world around us that can be ordered, efficiently approached, and filtered through equations and sequences that would help us find cosmic rhythm in the surrounding counterparts.

After learning about fractal geometry, the Golden Ration, the Fibonacci sequence and now exponential decay, I realize where higher math minds could be employed to help us calculate the augmentations necessary to resume order to the world around us.

Whether we are attacking the concept of bacterial widespread, the mass extinction of more than one species of animal or plant life, the depletion of our natural water supply, the exponential decay formula can come into use and aid us in changing our world around us.

One day, I hope to have children, and I would hope that they too could be afforded the privilege of looking around them at the world outside their classroom, the spectrum outside their toy box and find that the world is ordered, mathematical, and structured at such a high rhythmic process that only some minds are able to attain the spaces needed to maintain formulaic approaches. But, it can be done. This is the world that I would like to bring my children in to. This is the world that I believe can exist.

I have always loved math. I have always loved music. I have always loved nature. Seeing the algebraic and formulaic equation represented between the biological worlds around me give me hope that we will find a solution to the 2012 confusion. I believe in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow. I intend to be one of the ones who rise up to make a change on this planet before it is too late. The more I learn the more exponential potential I obtain.

Thank you for the thoughts this class has placed in my ever seeking knowledge brain.

level evolution

i was sipping slow
at your ethereal fountain
till i realized it wasn't ethereal
and i realized i was drowning
one more second's time and I would have been out for the count
sunken like a forgotten penny
wish made
sun fade
soul jade
we payed the price tonite
over right?
this game you laid in my bed is out of site
never thought I would see the things i saw tonight
strange energy danced around me till i saw the error of my ways
funny sometimes how the soul screams to say
i hearken
embarking on this new journey
the truth of tomorrow's me

By the Way

By the way
I am done
You never were listening
To my story
And by the way
I had a lot to say
And just because you gave me a glimmer of hope
In between the rope that I scoped
And slung around my neck
I have to protect my best interest
Which by the way
Is me
See?
I have finally come to the conclusion
Let myself down slow from this tree named Illusion
No more endangered by your type of confusion
This contusion came by my own creation
The sensation your soul made in mine
When you looked into my eyes
Made me ready to fly
Ready to heal
Ready to steel just one more kiss for you
From you I hoped to receive strong arms
And a chest on which to sleep
Once in a while
Smile as you looked in my eyes
But your head still too clouded to
Begin to size me up
I am done
Cup runneth over
No more wishin on four leaf clover
I need a King not a chauffer
Need someone ready to march on streets
Filled with heat
Hit the mic with or without a beat
I am a soul seeking missile
And I am on a mission
So listen hard to this confession
It may very well be the last you hear from me
I am shaking the tree
I am knocking hard
On this speak easy door
Floor mopped up all my tears that fell
I swell with pride as I look in the mirror
At my own eyes
And I am wide width and ready for labor
I am a messiah not a savior
Look at your own life and remember who pays you
And when your guilt chokes you remember who enslaved you
Cuz I was here to set you free
Nehast
And I have been mediatating fast
Sweet talking demons away from me
Seething in my own private misery
No more
By the way
I am a Queen and a goddess
Walked the River Nile
And if you think that my white skin is glistening
A little different than what you used to think of melanin
You right
I am out of sight
Off the planet
Wanted love
Never planned this
And Sun, I gotta hand you
This
Is by far the strangest love affair
I've known
Hone in on my Spidey Senses
Shed you from my womb
Like the deepest cleansing menses
I have broken down the segregating fences
May the tide of Revolution begin tonight!
And by the way
I am no longer afraid.
By the way
I'm done

What is your dream?

“And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!Martin Luther King.

I also have a dream. My dream is as one with the dream of the Great King. I desire equality, unity, and spiritual freedom. It is for this purpose that I chose Martin Luther.

In a world where the gravity of social consciousness is weighted heavily and effects deeply our decision making process, it is not always easy to do what is right. It is not always easy to commit to our individual sight of how the world should be. It is not always easy to believe that one person can make a difference.

Martin Luther King proved that one person can. Martin Luther did right because right was an inherent part of his design (Kohlberg’s Post-Conventional Level of Moral Reasoning). In the first part of my paper, I gave background information on his childhood and upbringing. The purpose of this investigation was to show elements of M.L. King that most of us do not know. I wondered if it were innate in him to spiritually become the power filled force he was to be remembered as, or was it predominantly due to his upbringing.

His behavioral conditioning certainly must be factored in as he had a very strong, hard-working, intellectual father; a mother that was loving and nurturing; and a very special connection with his Nana. However, I feel we must delve deeper into his psyche to truly gain what needs to be seen about Martin Luther King.

He entered this world ready to fight. He entered this world sensitive to the needs of others. He entered this world willing to learn and work hard to perpetuate necessary change.

From a humanistic approach, and with regard to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, I feel that his foundation was incredibly strong. His goal was incredibly high and he had all the support needed to actually become the best of himself. All his basic needs were met and his family’s strength set him free and allowed him to traverse through Maslow’s structure and take it all the way to self-actualization.

He had the right to be angry. He had the right to fight for his people. He had the right to express his deep frustration with the societal hypocrisy around him. However, he still refused to advocate violence. Step outside the box with me momentarily if you will. Using Drive Reduction theories, perhaps we could imagine that M.L. King saw the society around him as a breathing organism. He saw the imbalance. He saw what could be done to breed change. He threw his heart, back and soul into arduous attempts to return societal degradation to homeostasis. He recognized Carl Rogers stated truth, “Congruent communication breeds change.”

In 1964, M.L. became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial discrimination and segregation. He used methods of a non-violent nature communicated through civil disobedience. His passion is intoxicating as you listen to his delivery of his “I Have a Dream” Speech.

I think through emotion culture and social referencing a lot of the masses in tune with him were affected deeply by his passion and thus became mirrors of the values he ardently expressed. He was a great leader, and even his untimely assassination could not stop the exponential force of his Dream.

“Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.”

May we all remember to dream. One person can breed positive change. We are a powerful force. The mind is a powerful weapon. Peace is possible. What is your dream?

Puzzle Pieces

My bedroom is layered and floating in waves of patterns
We matter to the Divine
Shatter and refine
Sitting in supine
Supple position
We listen
Rehearse and recite
With all of our might
Our best shot
Broken sleep
She dances
Tears not shed
She romances
Herself the best with new chances
Evaporate the sheets
Dreams come and stay fresh
We remember vibratory moments
Oceans of thought not remembered
Feelings connected to profound sound
Be devout
About something
With a cracked jug, she gathered water
And offered quench to the earths suns and daughters
No proffer
Just offer
Turns out this jug is holy water
Sodder and restore the flame
Fire and we remember the name
Secret and ancient
We turn the page
Gather strength for these wars we wage
Sage to the masses
Whirling dervish
Lightning flashes
Who woulda thought the daughter of a pastor
Would gather enough courage
To engage the masses
Truth filled glasses
Half remembered in drunken fashion
We askin
Questions to answers from days long gone by
Truth filled glasses
Drunken masses
We gassed and flashin
As Bugatti coupes keep passin
We masked and waxin stronger in fashion
Return to our passion
This flame named desire
Repressed wetness
She sweats out demons that beget her
Day after day
We stray far but never tarry
Or in that space we might be buried
Better yet, we might be married
A celebration is at hand
We stand taller than our shadows
We are climbing Jacob's ladder
Skin made of alabaster
We faster in bare feet
Sheets of pantomimed Rain
Sane for the swiftness
We gather it with quickness
We sift and call it sifted
Perception of the dead
Steady as we travel
Work hard not to unravel
Our face has grazed the gravel
The gavel saves the day
Promenade
You offer up your thin facade
I do not accept your shadow box
Side step the truth no more
Pour out your liquid heart
Fire starter and depart
We alter hard the cause
Holy alms on our daily grind
We are signed, sealed, and delivered
Slivered bits of ice
We shiver
Withered vines
She come hither
Here we go again
Can't sleep tonite
I'm restless
Blessed as by the truth I'm vested
We administer our faith and test it
Wander onward as we go
Womb song
Tonite I know I can't go wrong
Long fingers ache to stretch out strong
And play their cosmic song
We linger
Stretched out like cosmic fingers
Tickle things we cannot name
The song remains the same
Yes
She's dressed in Sunday fabric
All the gods long to have this
Bliss of cosmic madness
Patterns of space diving squirrels

Rising Sun

Breath to my chest as I expand and recess
I am breathing my best as I waste nothing less
I am hope filled and pressed in my Sunday best
Watching for tests of my will and my mesh
I am in between the stages of empty pages
And novels written by pronounced sages
I am winning wars waged
Like victory
Staring back at me
The mirror sees all we forget to be
And when I speak
This oracle sounds out loud like Destiny
So no matter who decides to walk with me
I am fulfilling my personal prophecy
And some remain scoffing me
But that is part of the process, see?
So I contain all that I should for this particular stage
And when I am done
I will march across the water into the setting sun
Battle won
Eternity in the moment
I found it and own it
I freeze it and hone it
And consider this golden
I am molten like a lizard in the heat
Feet stepping to a particular beat
I repeat
Battle won
Eternity in the moment
I found it and own it
Consider me woven
Strands of etheral mass
Star dust and full of gas
Ready to take off and overflow the glass
We smash head first sometimes into the past
And then, we begin fresh
Again, in my sunday best
Waiting for the next proscribed test
Headed West
I am the rising Sun
