The Soloist

Anyone who knows me at all and has seen this powerful film knows how deeply it must have impacted me. Afterward, we were asked to write a brief description about our feelings on the movie. I wrote a poem:

Violin strains of syncopated time
Incarcerated populations
Broke but never broken
Spoken words by the best spokesmen
Could never ascertain
What one soul needs
Beauty
As we plead on our knees
To see every people freed
Yet what does freedom mean
In a population so dissonant?
Who dares tell another
How to speak to the Divine?
The sublime nature
Of the music we make
Cacophony against
The wars we wage
Labels and slaves in a system
Who creates the space?
For every man
To raise his flag
And rest his head
And simply be
Breathe
Wings of the Phoenix
Fly free
